How often should you mow your lawn in Christchurch?

Ask five Cantabrians how often they mow and you'll get five answers. The honest one is: it depends on the season. Canterbury grass doesn't grow at one speed all year, so the mowing rhythm that works in October will be overkill in February.

Spring: mow little and often

From September through November, warmth plus spring rain sends lawns into overdrive. Weekly mowing is the norm, and in a wet spring some lawns genuinely need it every five to six days. The golden rule is never to take more than a third of the blade height in one cut — regular passes keep the grass dense, which crowds out weeds and moss far better than any product.

Summer: ease off and raise the cut

When the nor'wester dries things out, growth slows right down. Fortnightly mowing is usually plenty, and raising the cutting height a notch shades the soil and helps the lawn hold moisture. A slightly longer summer lawn survives dry spells far better than one shaved to the dirt.

Autumn and winter: tidy, don't scalp

Growth tapers off from March. Keep mowing while the grass is still growing — usually every two to three weeks through autumn — then leave the final cut a touch longer going into winter. One last tidy before the cold sets in keeps the lawn clean and reduces disease pressure.

The short version

Weekly in spring, fortnightly in summer, taper through autumn, rest in winter. If that rhythm sounds like a lot to keep up with, that's exactly what a regular mowing round is for — our lawn mowing service runs weekday rounds across Christchurch, so your lawn stays on schedule without you thinking about it.
